Adam and Claira Whipp are gearing up to welcome visitors to their annual sunflower spectacle at their Timmering farm in Victoria.
The couple cultivates a whopping 12 hectares of sunflowers, planting about 420,000 seeds each year.
“We sow 35,000 seeds to the hectare, over 12 hectares, so 420,000 plants,” Adam said.
“We do it every year just to bring some joy to families and friends and let them come out, take some photos and play in the sunflowers for an hour or so.”
The Whipps throw open their farm gates on February weekends when the sunflowers are in full bloom.
Visitors can pay to frolic among the flowers, snap photos, and even pick a few to take home.
The experience has been a hit, drawing hundreds from across Victoria, including Melbourne, Gippsland, and Ballarat.
As part of the Sunflowers of Timmering experience, Claira Whipp puts her photography skills to use, offering sunset photoshoots for families, couples, kids, and mates when the sunflowers are at their most stunning.
Adam admits that while sunflowers are a tough crop to grow, the smiles they bring to visitors’ faces make it all worthwhile.
The exact opening dates in February depend on farming conditions and will be announced closer to the time.
