The department has calculated that Kyabram P-12 College has 20 surplus rooms and said it would remove the building on November 24.

Kyabram P-12 College principal Stuart Bott said the school was willing to lose the Year 7 community building (formerly known as the Year 7 learning studio) in order to work with the Education Department.

“It just was we have to do,” he said.

Ky Lawn considering taking back site’s ownership

Kyabram Lawn Tennis Club could soon change hands after a Shire of Campaspe council proposal to hand back ownership of the site to the club members.

Initially proposed four years ago but rejected, the site remains under the stewardship of the council, which wants ownership returned to the club in an effort to reduce its asset renewal burden.

However, the biggest issue facing a proposed transfer is the state of the site’s clubhouse, with money for a new clubhouse outlined in last year’s shire budget.

“In essence, the priority of the tennis club is to get the new clubhouse built under the arrangements in the previous budget,” Kyabram Lawn Tennis Club president Mark Schumann said.

Meg’s idea sells like hot cakes

Was there ever a sweeter fundraiser for a greater cause?

Meg Sargant joined the fight against animal cruelty by taking part in the RSPCA’s annual Cupcake Day last Monday.

With a little help from her mother Jenny, the Year 6 Kyabram P-12 College student had a huge weekend of baking.

She mixed, baked, iced and sprinkled 120 cupcakes to distribute on the day.

The fundraiser was part of a national event where schools and businesses across Australia baked cakes to raise money and awareness of animal cruelty.

Meg raised $132 with all proceeds going to the RSPCA, which estimates it helps 56,000 animals each year that are rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed.

Community SOS after Fauna Park ute is written off

Senseless vandals who wrote off the Kyabram Fauna Park’s only utility last weekend are probably unaware of the inconvenience and frustration they have caused to park manager Ron Pope and other park staff.

He’s almost convinced that wildlife has more sense than humans after inspecting the trashed vehicle this week.

Vandals stole the ute on Friday night, smashed it up, drained the oil from the sump, seized the engine and then dumped it in the river near Yambuna.

A fisherman discovered the ute’s roof sticking out of the water and alerted police of its whereabouts, but once it was recovered and inspected, mechanic John Sills said there was no way of even using the vehicle as a secondary unit for inside the park.

Ron Pope was at a loss to explain why whoever it was, did what they did.

Felice home for a break

Kyabram actor Felice Arena is home this weekend to attend his brother Phillip’s wedding in Melbourne and to also spend some time in his home town.

The young heart throb has just completed touring England, Ireland and Scotland in the starring role as Jesus in the production Godspell.

Before that, he played Woof in the smash-hit musical Hair, which ran for a three-month season at The Old Vic Theatre in London’s famous West End.

Felice’s father Tony and mother Nella, of Kyabram, made the trip to London to see the opening night of this production.

Felice, 25, has been constantly in the media spotlight since moving to England 18 months ago to pursue his blossoming acting career.

Ky Lions Ladies provide bed boost for hospital

Six new beds are being obtained for Kyabram and District Memorial Hospital’s day procedure unit, thanks to the Kyabram Lions Ladies.

Sister Mary Kendall explained to representatives of the Lions Ladies on a visit to the hospital that the beds would be beneficial to both patients and staff.

Sister Kendall demonstrated how the beds worked.

The beds are being obtained through a donation – part of the proceeds of a Lions Ladies craft show held recently.

New owners for Tongala business

The new owners Les and Glennis Cumming took over the business on Monday are now trading under the name L. L. & G. R Cumming Tongala Store.

Mr and Mrs Cumming with their two children, Sonia (10) and Shayne (8), previously owned a grocery store and newsagency at Balnarring on the Mornington Peninsula.

Mr Cumming said he sold out of that business, had a brief holiday in the United States and followed up an advertisement which eventually led to his taking over the Tongala business.

“Staff members, Wanda English and Elisa Noy, will be staying with the business,” Mr Cumming said.

He also said he intended to paint the shop and stock up on lines while he got to know the area, the people and their needs.

Mayor warns: ‘Difficult year ahead’

The coming year could be a most difficult one, Cr A M Rowlands said on Monday after being elected Kyabram’s mayor for another 12 months.

He said inflation would cause every item of expenditure to be increased.

“I hope that things will not come to a standstill, but we will continue to progress and be able to provide better facilities without over burdening the ratepayers,” Cr Rowlands said.

Following his re-election, Cr Rowlands said his past year in office had made him fully aware of the responsibilities and duties required of as mayor and he would endeavour to fulfil these requirements to the best of his ability.

Sue is Miss Footy

Sue Fry, 17, has been crowned Miss Kyabram Football.

She was crowned the winner of the quest at a cabaret held at the Tijuana on Saturday night.

The event was organised by the Kyabram Football Club Ladies Committee.

Sue, who said she didn’t give herself any chance of winning, won the quest from seven other entrants.

Second place went to Sue Sullivan and third to Glenda Linke.

For her win, Sue received prizes and vouchers to the value of $150 with similar prizes to the value of $80 and $40 to the second and third place getters.
