Edward River Council has partnered with Deniliquin Business Chamber on the Windows to our History Project.
It recognises that Deniliquin, like many rural towns across the country, has faced significant challenges due to ongoing extreme weather events, changing customer shopping behaviours, and the rise of online shopping.
These factors have contributed to store closures and extended retail vacancies, impacting the heart of the local community.
These empty buildings will now highlight some of Deniliquin's lesser-known historical figures and events through a series of stories illustrated by local artist Sivonne Binks.
These stories will be brought to life in six large, colourful window decals created by local signage and design business VisAttak.
Featured stories include:
• Cyril Gove: His historic achievement of competing at a national level in three different sports on the same day.
• Aileen Dent: A celebrated artist known for her work in the Archibald Prize.
• Captain Melville: A daring and dashing bushranger.
These eye-catching artworks will provide an entertaining glimpse into Deniliquin's history for all those passing by.
The first installations of the Windows to our History Project are located on the facades of 44 and 46 Napier St, and 259 Cressy St.
It is hoped that more landlords and retailers will come on board in 2025.
