The Kaiela Arts X Spacecraft Screen-printing Project has seen the production of a new range of 100 per cent linen screen-printed tea towels and other products featuring artworks and designs that highlight the diversity of art organisation.
Yorta Yorta creatives Lyn Thorpe, Belinda Briggs, Ally Knight, Tammy-Lee Atkinson, Suzanne Atkinson and Tiarne Hall (Wiradjuri) draw inspiration from woka (country) and yenbenal (ancestors), creating designs unique to fresh-water country in the Kaiela-Dungala region.
This project has seen artists develop new skills, translate their artworks to print and activate a new portable screen-printing studio table designed and custom-built for Kaiela Arts by Spacecraft.
“Screen-printing makes it easier to reproduce artworks of mine that are popular and it also opens opportunities for our creative community to experiment with forms of art they might not have thought of before,” Ms Hall said.
This latest collaboration has aimed to develop the capacity and skills of Kaiela Arts and its artists to produce screen-printed textiles that capture local stories, culture and designs independently.
“Screen-printing will be a real drawcard for Kaiela Arts’ artists,” Spacecraft’s Stewart Russell said.
“We imagine in the future that we’re going to have some pretty substantial screen-printing technologies here in Shepparton.”
