Deniliquin Police Chief Inspector Michael Fuller said common among many of the recent incidents is that items have been left in cars, with most cars unlocked.
“When you park your vehicle, usually overnight in the street or at your house, it is always a good practice to check you have taken all your valuables such as money, mobile phones, personal identity items, laptops and other valuable items out of the vehicle,” he said.
“It is also a good practice to check that all the vehicle windows are up, and the vehicle has been locked successfully when you leave it.
“These steps can have a very good outcome with reducing the risk of your vehicle being broken into and property taken.
“Even if you are using your car and stop somewhere, perhaps at the shops for a short time, it’s a good practice to ensure you keep any valuables out of sight - even if you are only away from the vehicle for a short time.
“Often thieves will walk around looking for things to steal and if they can see an opportunity, they will steal.
“It's very much a case of risk versus reward. Don’t reward them with easy access to items in your car and protect your items, particularly overnight by not leaving valuables in your vehicle.”
Since the Pastoral Times last spoke with police on Monday, another three property crime incidents have been reported.
About 6.30am on January 2, a number of items of property were stolen from sheds at a house in Macauley St, Deniliquin.
About 11.20pm the following day, an attempt was made to steal a vehicle at the house.
Police say it is likely the incidents were linked.
Between 1am and 2am Sunday, an amount of property was removed from a vehicle parked at a house in Butler St, Deniliquin.
Between 3.30pm Monday and 8.30am Tuesday, money was removed from a vehicle that was parked at a house in Burton Street, Deniliquin.
