Member for Northern Victoria Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell has thrown her support behind the expansion of the successful Education First Youth Foyer program into regional Victoria.

Mrs Tyrrell recently toured the Shepparton Education First Youth Foyer, learning more about the work of the facility’s staff in helping residents who were previously homeless or sleeping rough.

In a question to Housing Minister Harriet Shing in Victorian Parliament, Ms Tyrrell acknowledged the funding allocation for two new youth foyers in both Wodonga and Wangaratta.

Still, she sought a timeline on when the Victorian Government would announce support funding for both facilities.

In her contribution, Mrs Tyrrell highlighted Infrastructure Victoria’s Strategy 2021-2051 document that recommended the establishment of additional Youth Foyers in regional Victoria.

“The current Youth Foyers in Broadmeadows, Glen Waverley and Shepparton have changed for the better the lives of many vulnerable young Victorians. With the current housing crisis it is time this wonderful program is expanded to other regional centres,” Ms Tyrrell said.

“I know that Bendigo and Mildura are both in need of an Education First Youth Foyer to help address youth homelessness and I look forward to working constructively with Minister Shing to expand this life-changing program.”
