Detectives have been told a woman, 30, and her partner, 37, were asleep at their home on Baynes Rd, Rochester, when unknown people gained entry to the premises between 7pm on June 18 and 2.30am on June 19.
Police believe they stole the keys to a black 2023 Suzuki Swift and took off in the vehicle.
The Suzuki was later seen at a service station on the Murray Valley Hwy, Echuca, about 2.30am.
A man got out of the passenger seat, filled the car with fuel, and drove off without paying, police said.
The following day, two people were spotted in the Suzuki on Kooringal Rd, in the Melbourne suburb of Upwey, at 12.04am, police said.
It is understood the Suzuki was ditched and located by officers on Forest Park Rd, Upwey, about 4.50am on June 20, police said.
Investigators have released still images and CCTV footage of a man they believe may be able to assist with their inquiries.
The man is perceived to be Caucasian, in his early 20s, with a slim build and blonde hair.
He was wearing a black puffer jacket, black pants, black shoes and sunglasses on his head.
