The museum will be open to the public again from Monday, June 22, although it will be by appointment only.
“Everyone at the museum is champing at the bit to get everything back up and running,” museum project co-ordinator Sam Watkins told Australian Community Media.
John Forbes’ personal collection of sporting goods makes up a large amount of the collection, and the volunteers have been using the time behind closed door to catalogue each individual item.
“I've been picking John's brain on how he received each piece in the collection and also on his relationship with each person who gave him the item,” Ms Watkins said.
“We want to know as much as we can about each item, that's what makes our museum so unique, there is a personal story behind each and every item.
“Each piece of memorabilia has such a strong personal history for John.”
Despite the re-opening, Watkins said the museum would be unable to cater for large groups of people.
“The main reason for bookings is so that we can plan ahead,” Ms Watkins said.
“We don’t want people coming to our museum and standing in the cold. And it’s another way of protecting our volunteers.
“Prior to the lockdown, we were open Thursday to Sunday but with these changes our volunteers will be happy to come in on any day.”
