The club’s leading men’s and ladies’ golfers added the 2025 title to their trophy cabinet, with Thomas scoring a comfortable 12 shot victory after the final round, though it was not as easy for Brunker.
She was being hotly pursued in the last 18 holes by Pauline Davis, before breaking clear in the final nine holes to win by four shots.
There were exciting finishes on Saturday in the final championship rounds in men’s B and D grades. Both required three-hole play-offs on holes 10, 11 and 18.
In B-grade Neil Boswell and Ross Pogonoski were tied on 262 after the three championship rounds, with Boswell taking the title on the third play-off hole, while in D grade Geoff Mulham and Graeme Rothwell were tied on 307, with Mulham winning the play-off.
Men’s C-grade winner was Peter Thompson with a combined 277, by five shots to runner-up Ron Turner.
The ladies’ B-grade winner was Jane Armytage 298 by two shots to Marg Rothwell; C-grade winner was Ann Bull on 324 by an impressive 14 shots to runner-up Yvonne Holmes, and D-grade winner was youngster Rivah Taylor on 336 from runner-up Sue Butcher 343.
There were stroke events held in conjunction with the championship rounds on both Thursday and Saturday.
Thursday’s A-grade winner was Marg Rothwell with nett 75 from runner-up Kerran Leetham 76, with the scores much better in B-grade which was won by Judy Gatacre with a superb nett 61, which saw Mardi Chartres having to accept the runners-up prize despite having nett 63.
On Saturday, the A-grade winner was Leigh Chappell nett 71 on countback to Vince Kelly; B-grade Kerran Leetham nett 70 from runner-up Geoff King 73; C-grade Russell Begg 72 from runner-up Norm Purtill 73, and C-grade George Kenney-Herbert with the best score of the day, nett 65, from runner-up Denise Hunter 73.
On Monday Deniliquin hosted the Goulburn Valley Veteran’s Golfers’ Association stableford event, and local knowledge was an obvious advantage with Deni golfers taking out two of the three grades.
A-grade winner was Barry Barlow with 42 points, which was the best score of the day, and B-grade winner was Bryan Bennett with 36 points. Deni golfers to figure in the ball competition were John Radeski, Graeme Willoughby, Russell Begg, and Peter O’Brien.
In Wednesday’s stableford event the A-grade winner was Gary Davies with 39 points and runner-up Peter Joice 38. B-grade winner was Alan Jenkin 40 points from runner-up Samual Scott 37, and C-grade winner was Toby Rae with 41 points from runner-up Sacha Free on 40.
Coming up we have stableford for the Borella Cup tomorrow, then on Tuesday there is the 9-hole shootout qualifier, Wednesday is stableford, Thursday is stableford for the Rita Barnes Goblet, and next Saturday is fourball bestball stableford.
Diggers Day is on Sunday, April 27. This will be four-person ambrose, $30 per player, which includes lunch. Register online or at the pro shop; 11am assembly for 11.30am shotgun start.
