Two people interviewed over CBD power outage

Businesses were without power and traffic was thrown into chaos for two-and-a-half hours in the Shepparton central business district on Wednesday, January 8.

The traffic lights on the intersection of High and Maude Sts stopped working and businesses in the immediate area were left without electricity after police allege a power box was tampered with.

Shepparton police Constable Nelson Rouw said police were investigating after it is believed two people potentially turned off power to the area about 2pm.

It is alleged they may have tampered with switches in a power unit, which has tripped power supply to shops in the area and the set of traffic lights, Constable Rouw said.

Police were on scene directing traffic at the intersection of High and Maude Sts until about 4.30pm when power was restored by Powercor workers who were called to investigate the incident.

Police said two Shepparton men – aged 30 and 35 – had been interviewed over the incident and were released pending summons.
