Round two of the 2021-22 Aboriginal Sport Participation Grant Program is now live, supporting First Nations Victorians to cover the cost of uniforms, equipment and travel to participate in events.
More than $87,000 is available to promote sport among First Nations communities, with Community Sport Minister Ros Spence announcing the second round’s opening on Monday, November 1.
“This program has already made an incredible difference by supporting Aboriginal Victorians to get involved with local sport — creating healthier, happier and more united communities,” Spence said.
“I encourage community sporting clubs, Aboriginal organisations, local participants, volunteers and passionate communities to take advantage of this opportunity and support the next generation of Aboriginal champions.”
A threshold has been placed on what teams can apply for; up to $1500 for participation in state or national sport carnivals, $1000 for uniforms and equipment and $750 for travel and accommodation expenses.
Designed to stimulate sport — and its widespread benefits — in First Nations communities, the program has handed out 128 grants totalling more than $138,000 to First Nations community organisations, clubs and individuals across the state since the start of the program in 2020.
“Sport is a wonderful part of Victorian life and we want everyone to have the chance to get involved and progress through the ranks,” Aboriginal Affairs Minister Gabrielle Williams said.
“The benefits of sports participation extend beyond the individual and enrich the community.”
