Travelling to Kyabram Recreation Reserve, the Saints put together a valiant effort in the heat, but were unable to topple the Bombers, who claimed the 40-32 win.
It was a brilliant battle from the first possession, with Kyabram edging ahead to take an 8-7 lead at quarter-time, which became a 19-16 lead by the half, with the Saints well and truly in contention just three goals in arrears.
With the possibility of a first win since 2023 a real chance, Benalla stayed right in the fight throughout the third term, and while it was outscored by Kyabram by a goal, remained four goals back at the final change.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t to be, with the Bombers pulling away to record the eventual eight-goal win, however, it is an encouraging sign from the Saints who stayed competitive until the final whistle.
Chloe Hill and Chloe Elliott were the standouts in the loss, with Elliott putting through 23 of the Saints’ 32 total, while Claire Marriott made an impressive A-grade debut, backing up after a standout B-grade, showing great fight for every ball to earn her a spot in the best players.
The Saints will look to bring the same intensity to their clash against Echuca at Benalla Showgrounds at the weekend, where the hunt for the first win of the year continues.
B-grade
Benalla 33 drew Kyabram 33
In a thrilling finish, Benalla came away with a hard-fought draw. Alex Robinson, Jodi Symes, and Matilda Horne starred, with Matilda debuting in both B and A-grade at just 15 years old.
Her composure and strong presence in goals made a real impact. Also debuting was Eliza Sammon, who was elevated by her strong performance in U17s. Eliza applied strong defensive pressure getting lots of tips on the ball.
Both girls made their presence known on court and look to be exciting prospects for the Saints.
