Our U12 Blue team kicked the weekend off with a game on Friday night against Delatite. Losing the toss and getting sent in to bat, the Blue team quickly got to work putting runs on the board.
In another strong performance, Caleb Hein added 18 more to his season’s tally and Luke Conway chipped in with 12 runs of his own.
Ted Clancy finished not out on 24 and Tom Lambert retired on 28.
Setting a target of 115, the Blue team quickly got to work with the ball in their hands, restricting all but one batter to less than 10 runs. An impressive night with only 14 extras bowled made for tight consistent bowling.
With six individual wicket takers plus two run-outs, the Blue team showed the depth of their young talent.
Score:
U12 Blue – 4-115
Delatite – 8-59
U12 Green
Choosing to bowl first on Saturday morning at Arundel St proved to be a great decision for the Green team, considering the day was warming up quickly. Ryan Lindsay got involved early on with a run-out, putting Yarrawonga Lakers at 1-0.
Jaxson Heatherill and Bentley Parker both had great spells with the ball, picking up a wicket each and sending both batters back to the pavilion with no runs.
When it came time to bat, the Green team put on a great display, with every player contributing to the team’s total. Bentley Parker (16) was determined to hit a six but unfortunately came a couple of feet short of the boundary, but still made for impressive viewing.
Every batter in the Green team made runs and it was an all-over team effort to get the required runs to win the game.
Score:
U12 Green – 2-128
Yarrawonga Lakers – 7-58
U12 Red
The Red team had to travel to Yarrawonga to take on the Rams side and was sent into bat.
Things got off to a shaky start, losing a couple of quick wickets, but Louis Horne came in at number three and steadied the team, posting 11 runs.
Jack McKenzie and Archer Pickering were able to add a further 10 runs each to help the Red side set the target at 60 runs.
The Pickering boys combined with a run-out of a Rams batter set to do some damage and Josh Hooper bowled well, ending up with 2-12. Jack McKenzie had a great day in the field, bowling two overs for one run and taking two catches.
Score:
U12 Red – 8/60
Yarrawonga Rams – 6/110
U14 Red
The U14 Red team played on the Showgrounds for the first time this season and the ground and pitch looked immaculate for day one of this round.
Getting sent into bat first, the openers (who were borrowed from our Blue teammates) struggled slightly with the pace of the City Colts bowlers.
Jack Hart and Harry Skelton combined together again to build a partnership and get the runs ticking over. Really beautiful strokes were played and the running between the wickets was, although at times a little shaky, well communicated.
Angus Hayes, also from the Blue team, helped boost the total with a handy 24.
The team now looks to next week for its chance to bowl and defend the total of 137.
Score:
U14 Red – 10/137
U16s
The 16s hosted Delatite at the Gardens on Saturday morning and were asked to bat first by the visitors.
After a few weeks of scraping in results, the team was ready to put on a show.
Lucas Ham and Mitchell Cooney opened the batting and put on a masterclass for the crowd.
Lucas posted an incredible score of 75 runs, while Mitchell was able to make an impressive 47 of his own.
The running between the wickets and the talking between each batting pair was clear and concise, and continued for the whole of the match.
Hunter Carter (43) came in at number three ready to make an impact and did so with textbook shots and great decision-making. Josh Hart rounded out the opening four, posting a solid 34 runs.
The atmosphere of the game was positive and upbeat and they are keen to defend their runs next week.
Score:
U16 Bushies – 8/263 (40)

The Bushies lost the toss and were put in to bat first.
All the girls that played batted really well and are showing tremendous improvement with each week.
They only lost four wickets for the game and posted a total of 83 runs.
The bowling of the Bushies girls’ team is getting better and better, and the work that is being put in at training is starting to show.
They took four wickets but Beechworth was too strong on the night, finishing with 101.
Score:
U14 Girls – 4/83
Beechworth – 4/101
Seniors
A Reserve
The A Reserve boys played at the Showgrounds on a hot Saturday afternoon and chose to bowl first.
Simon Briggs got the game off to a good start, dismissing one of the Yarrawonga openers for a duck.
Kallum Croxford’s bowling was extremely sharp and he ended up with figures 3-19 off six overs, including two maidens. His caught-and-bowled wicket was play of the day, managing to catch the ball down at his ankles to the delight of his teammates.
Briggs was also impressive with the ball, ending with 2-17 off eight, including Yarrawonga’s dangerous number three, who finished on 94 runs.
Chasing 177, the Bushies went in to bat knowing that it was going to be a tough ask, but the boys were ready. Briggs was causing headaches for the bowlers making 48 and Lucas Ham, fresh off his big score with the juniors, added another 63 for the day.
Sam Gladstone kept the runs ticking over with 27 and Josh Hart and Josh Heylbut combined to equal the Yarrawonga score. Brady Purcell came to make sure of the result and in the end, the Bushies chased down the runs required with five overs in hand.
Score:
Bushies – 5/181 (35)
Yarrawonga – 7/177 (40)
B Grade
The B Grade team met Ovens Valley at home and was given the task of bowling first up by the visitors.
The youngsters of the team, Mitch Cooney and Riley McCarthy, got involved early by taking catches. Both ended with two catches for the day. Preet’s bowling attack was unforgiving, finishing with 3-2 off 4.2 overs, including three maidens.
Fielding performance of the day goes to Mat Hadj for his run out. Fielding at point, the bowl was hit softly, Hadjy ran in, picked the ball up swiftly and hit the stumps directly.
Restricting Ovens Valley to 92, the Bushies were keen to get out to bat.
Brad Milligan (15) and Mitch Cooney (28) set the tone for the game with Steve Pickering taking the Bushies over the line with his 42 not out. The Bushies only needing 16.1 overs to get the job done.
Score:
Bushies – 3/93 (16.1)
Ovens Valley – 10/92 (33.2)
C Grade Red
The only senior team playing away this week, the C Grade Red team travelled to Moyhu to take on Greta White. Ian Costello and Nicholas Jacobs lead the charge with the ball, each ending up with four wickets.
David ‘Golden Gloves’ Priest was skilful behind the wickets, taking three catches for the game.
The young Greta side posted 64 runs off 23 overs for the Bushies to chase.
The Bushies chose to mix up the batting order and allow different players the chance to have a longer time at the crease. Murray Parton relished his opportunity with 20 runs, the top score for the Bushies.
Score:
Bushies – 6/65 (20.4)
Greta White – 10/64 (23)
C Grade Blue
The philosophy of the C Grade Blue team is that all the youngsters should get a go. This team is all about the development of our young up-and-comers and to help them improve their game at a higher level.
This method definitely worked on the weekend, as our young U14s, Harry Skelton and Xavier DeFazio, starred, taking four wickets each.
Steve Hart kicked off the wicket campaign, snagging an LBW with the first ball of the day and Jack Hart followed in his footsteps with an LBW of his own and also taking a cracker of a one-handed catch in the field.
Mark Osborne played like a man in his 20s, taking two remarkable catches (although some say it should have been more if he just got there in time...).
Chasing 129, the DeFazio combo opened the batting again and Christian DeFazio made an immediate impact, finishing with 74. Mark Osborne (13) and Andrew Ham (10) steadied the tally to help reach the required target.
All the young boys got a bat on the day and made the most of their opportunities. Most importantly, the game was always played with fun at the forefront, although the fight between the older players as to who will be the non-bat offers the most rewarding value to watch.
Score:
Bushies – 7/131 (28)
Gapsted – 10/129 (28.5)
