The mighty Mounts (2.3) got in front early, but couldn’t manage a lead more than a goal, with LBU kicking 1.3 at the same time.
While Mount Pleasant slowly but surely increased its lead in the second quarter, the Cats were never completely out of it, trailing by nine at the major break.
LBU lost it for itself in the third term, failing to put any points on the board, with the Mounts launching a full attacking assault through much of the period, kicking six majors and three minors to pull away.
The Cats managed to claw back incrementally down the stretch, kicking 2.1, equalling Mount Pleasant’s tally for the fourth quarter.
Unfortunately, that last effort was not enough to draw it back, and the Cats were left licking the wounds of a 50-point defeat.
The final score was LBU 5.7 (37) to Mount Pleasant 13.9 (87).
Stuart Taylor was the Cats’ most lethal attacking player, kicking a pair of goals, while Mt Pleasant’s Mitchell Bennett had a day, bagging six for the match.
Bowden Stone, Patrick Keele, Tyler Phillips, Matt Hore, James Yosiffidis, Thomas Leech were named as LBU’s best in the loss.
The Cats will remain at home in round three to face Colbinabbin and will celebrate their Men’s Health Day with ex-AFL player Tom Boyd speaking as a special guest.
Mount Pleasant is the lone two-win side in the competition and will host Leitchville-Gunbower next weekend.
Heathcote vs Colbinabbin
After a bye in the first round, Colbinabbin got its season under way in style with a solid 11.14 (80) to 7.10 (52) win over Heathcote at the Saints’ home ground of Barrack Reserve.
There was no killer blow from the Grasshoppers, with Colbo winning all four quarters by single digit margins to slowly pull away from its opposition.
The goal-kickers’ list also didn’t feature much in the way of standouts, with the Hoppers getting it done by committee with nine different scorers.
Alex Carr and Nick Knight were the only scorers to strike more than once.
Colbinabbin visits Lockington Recreation Reserve next Saturday.
Elmore vs White Hills
The defending champion is off to an ignominious start in 2025, with a fourth-quarter Elmore barrage dooming it to a heavy defeat, 17.19 (121) to 8.9 (57).
The Bloods had a slight edge over the opening half but could only convert the pressure into 6.12 (48) by half-time, the Demons still in the contest and just a goal in arrears.
A low-scoring third period gave way to a Bloods blitz in the fourth, with the host putting on 9.5 (59) in the final term while White Hills could only scrape together 1.1 (7).
Jordan Thomson led the way for Elmore with four majors, while James Harney (3), Matthew O’Dwyer (3) and Lachie Gawel (2) were the other multiple goal-kickers.
Elmore will travel to Strauch Reserve to take on Huntly next weekend.
