Tongala Basketball Association’s Under-20 boys grand final was a thrilling game between two sister sides, with star players Peter Varcoe and Peter Edwards leading their team to victory.

Edwards shot 16 points in the win, while for the opposition team, Lindsay McKenzie (who was the best-and-fairest winner) shot 16 points.
Checkmates won the girls under-20 grand final by six points, with D. Lyons the star for the winners. Adrian Hurban won the under 20 girls best-and-fairest, while Sharon Atkins was the under-16 girls winner and Ofcan Ofturk won the under-16 boys title.
– Russ Morgan was the youngest of three cricket stars from the Kyabram District Cricket Association’s round of games, scoring 103 for Girgarre in its win against Tatura.
Laurie Sherman, who turned 50 a week earlier, scored 92 for Stanhope against Tongala, while B-grade star Graham King helped Kyabram beat Merrigum by scoring 87 for his team.
Another of Girgarre’s young brigade, Greg Halls, made 60 as he and Morgan partnered for a 146-second wicket stand.
Other stars from the round were Tongala skipper Max Hine, who took 5-25 and Wyuna’s Des Nunn.
1986
Six Kyabram girls made up a dynamic gymnastics team that won a competition at Sunbury.
Ranging in age from seven to 14, they beat 10 teams and scored an average of 8.5 to take out first place. Head coach of the team was Les Johnston, assistant coach Pam Pimm and Tania Johnston.
The Kyabram club had 144 members and 16 coaches at the time of the competition.
– Seven life members of Kyvalley Tennis Club gathered at the club to present Geoff Beamish with his award. He had 26 years in various roles at the club and the occasion was a double celebration with the opening of the new $27,000 pavilion.
Deakin Shire president Cr Ted Flanagan cut the ribbon in front of 150 people. Geoff was presented with his life membership by another of the club’s stalwarts, Ed Tonkin
1996
Andrew Torney scored a century and 90 in consecutive days for the Goulburn Valley at the Victorian Secondary Schools Sports Association cricket carnival at Swan Hill.
The left-hander dominated Latrobe Valley and backed it up against Wimmera the next day. Torney and Josh Finn, who was keeper for the team, were the Kyabram representatives in the team.
– Two Kyabram Little Aths stars earned places at the Jones Lang Wootton (JLW) coaching camp at Melbouirne University for the school holidays.
Robert Cottrell jumped 1.66 metres in the high jump, while Wiliam Murray threw the javelin 31.05m to qualify. The squad offered athletes 13 years and over a chance to hone their skills, with both boys contributing to an outstanding year by the Kyabram centre.
In the first nine weeks of 1996-97, there had been a staggering total of 133 records broken.
– Damien Morvell and Wayne Hanslow combined to defend their Goulburn Valley regional title.
Morvell also won his fifth GV men’s singles title when he beat Echuca’s Andrew Crossman. He was only a month away from attempting to claim another inter-regional title at Wodonga.
– Kyabram night netball section one winners were Red Sox, with a team that included Sharon Mangan, Barb Hilder, Neisha Roberts, Elly Parr, Melissa Vick, Leonnie Hilder, Kerryn O’Keefe, Debbie Morris, Min Hutchinson and Kaye Hearn.
In section two, Deanne Wilson, Kara Richardson, Kim Colman, Marg Nepear, Elizabeth Shield, Tracey McArthur, Raelene Johnson, Mia Mason and Pauline Thorson combined to guide Hospies to victory.
Other names to feature were section four winners Shifties: Tracey Scarcella, Lisa Garland, Joy Orr, Susan Peacock, Angela Saunders, Anne Davis, Diane Sperling, Kerry Saunders and Renee Quattrochi.
2006
Rising tennis star Brayden Smith-Morvell represented the Goulburn district at a Gippsland event, successful in two of his five singles games and winning three of his five mixed doubles games with partner Kate Besierkerski.
Brayden was runner-up in the 16 and under singles and also made it to the quarter semi-finals of two other events.
– Kyabram little athletics quartet of Jana Lawson, Elivia Hall, Winton Findlay and Brad Whitford took on the best teams in the state and finished second in the under nine 4x200 metre relay.
The winning team clocked two minutes 18 seconds, with the Kyabram team one second behind. Kyabram went into the lead with a leg to run, but a city runner just reeled in Brad Whitford in the final leg.
Earlier in the day, the same team contested the 4x100 metres relay and finished third in their heat. Other athletes to feature were Luke Mangan, Thomas Jackson, Hayden Gemmill and Aaron Hayes.
A team of under-11 medley runners Freya Findlay, Abbey McKenzie, Emily Lawson and Carlie Whitford also finished strongly in their heat.
– Tongala skipper Darin Ohlsen showed the way for the KDCA in a McPherson shield match, scoring a stylish 94 in a run-a-ball innnings.
His knock included eight boundaries and four sixes, coming to the crease when Kyabram had lost Paul Newman and Paul Ranson cheaply.
Paul Parsons backed him up, as did Sam Nelson and later Jarrod Chapman, who took two wickets.
