Round 14 saw the Rutherglen Cats head up to Kiewa following a much-needed weekend off to recharge the batteries for the big run home with just five games remaining.
Congratulations to Braedan Hatton who ran out in a Rutherglen jersey for the 250th time!
The Cats were greeted to a real winter’s day with consistent rain and wind making it a tough contested game of football. A special mention to all the Cat’s supporters who made the trip up in the inclement weather.
Kiewa jumped Rutherglen early and capitalised on the wind with a 5 goal to 1 opening quarter which could have been worse if not for birthday boy Bennett Thomas stopping everything that came his way.
The Cats were able to get their hands on the ball in the second quarter, led by Reed Bonat’s stoppage work and Ben Pleming’s run-and-carry, restricting the Hawks and not allowing them to kick a goal.
Unfortunately, Rutherglen found it tough to score after the half-time break, although Thomas Kilpatrick looked threatening every time he had the ball in his hands.
Kiewa was able to run away with the game in the second half and showed the Cats how to be clean and composed in tough conditions.
This was a disappointing result, but our focus quickly shifts to this week as we look to get one back on Tallangatta after they got us by one point in Round 3.
Reserves
Cats 1-0-6 def by KSC 24-18-162
This week against KSC it was more about getting a side on the park, with a few of the regular boys playing senior footy and others battling the flu and little annoying injuries.
Enormous credit and gratitude go to those who ran out in cold wintery conditions. Big thank you also to the guys from KSC who put on a Cat’s jumper to make a game of it. This is what country footy is all about and the Cat’s family appreciate it very much.
Awards: Poachers Paradise Hotel – Duane Maloney, Schnitz Albury – Scott Francis, Metro Petroleum – Mitch Huggins, Rutherglen Pizza – Josh Pagan-Saunders, Club Corowa – Declan Peacock.

Cats 4-3-27 def by KSC 8-9-57
Wintery conditions consisting of drizzly rain and blustery arctic squalls made for a tough game of the round. The first quarter saw KSC taking advantage of the wind to kick four goals two to Rutherglen’s one goal one.
KSC could have kicked away with more but credit to the back line being well held with intercept marks by Aidan Berriman, Lucas Moore and Fred Jackson.
In the second quarter, Rutherglen tried but failed to capitalise on the wind, with multiple scoring shots just falling short. Good leads from Ari Pinn and Harry Saville, who was unlucky to miss kicking his first goal for the year.
Harry Chandler battled hard, as he does every week. The ball predominantly stayed in the Rutherglen forward line, limiting KSC’s tally. Countless forward advances and inside fifties led by Ethan Gregor just couldn’t convert.
The second half saw good work from Snowy Barnes, Archer Colvin and Mitch Francis who combined well in the centre. KSC were limited to only two goals in the third quarter and held goalless in the fourth quarter thanks to great work from Charlie Poole, but Rutherglen couldn’t capitalise enough with the scoring end wind to take the lead. Goal kickers: Ethan Greggor 3, Harry Chandler 1.
Awards: Rutherglen Pizza – Lucas Moore, Silver Key Café – Aiden Berriman, Corowa Sportspower – Archer Colvin, Schnitz Albury – Mitch Francis, Coaches Awards – Ryan Barkley, Ethan Gregor.

Cats 7-17-59 def KSC 0-2-2
Tough conditions faced the Under 14 Cats at Kiewa as they came up against the KSC Hawks.
Conditions were cold, slippery and blustery, and the players showed great resilience in the wet. Jax Ramsay, Brayden McInnes and Dustin Fisher teamed up well from the bounce and provided a much-needed drive through the centre. Jax and Dusty scored two goals each, which was important in a low-scoring affair.
The Cracknell brothers, Jaylen and Noah. both had great games. Aiden Sibraa was again a contributor on the scoreboard, ably assisted by Arthur Morris, Lucas Zani and Nash Eloy.
The backline was strong and repelled the Hawks' forays forward, which resulted in them only scoring two points for the match.
At the final siren, Rutherglen were able to cement their third position on the ladder as they approach the business end of the season.
Please come down and support the Cats next Saturday as they play Tallangatta at home.

In tough conditions, we started the game well, with Noah Cracknell kicking the first goal of what would be a terrific first half of football for the young cats.
The second half was a tough slog, with Kiewa really taking it right up to us.
Going into the last quarter undermanned, the young cats dug deep to run out 23-point winners in one of the best wins of the season.
Awards: Slopes $10 – Noah Cracknell, Silver Key Café – Tommy Ballantine, Rutherglen Lolly Shop – Cody J-Wood, Danny Johnson Most Courageous – Sevi Cottam, Boschetti Electrical – Brax Jennings, Coaches Award – James Nicholson.
