Tiger Mitch Trewhella could have been forgiven for thinking he had the Morrison medal wrapped up two-thirds of the way into voting.
Trewhella led Shepparton Bears’ Ashley Holland by nine votes going into the last six rounds of counting, but unfortunately it wasn’t to be for the Rochy star.
Holland polled 10 votes over the final third of the season, while Trewhella wasn’t able to add to his tally, going down by a single vote 25-24 in the final count.
Rochy’s Mitch Cricelli was also a strong performer throughout the season, polling 17 votes to finish in a share of fifth position.
However, there was a best-and-fairest winner to be found at Rochester as Sahra Brooks polled 27 votes and took out the Gaye Eaton medal for her efforts in B-reserve.
Unfortunately Brooks’ squad wasn’t able to add a championship to her list of 2024 honours, going down to Seymour in the B-reserve grand final at the weekend.
Kyle Waters and Fraser Cleary shared fourth place in the reserves best-and-fairest race, the duo a key factor in their side’s run to the decider.
Matisse Martin was also a fourth-placegetter for Rochy, earning 20 votes in the 17-and-under competition.
Tobie Woodfine was the leading goal-kicker in the under-18 competition, slotting a monster 81 majors for the season and defending his title from last season.
Also at the presentation night, Rachel Whipp was recognised for her efforts co-coaching the league’s interleague side, which defeated Ovens and Murray in their match-up.
It was a Shepparton double in the top grade best-and-fairest as Shepparton Bears’ Kim Borger received the league’s highest netball accolade, taking out the Wellman Medal with 30 votes, over the Mooroopna pair of Mia Fallon (28) and Caitlin McLachlan (25).
